Join the conference planning team to plan an NCTech4Good conference June 25, 2010 at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill. Post your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and concerns on this page using a Group Post. You will be notified by email when new posts are made.
Use the Resources section, which is like a wiki, to actually develop the agenda, budget, and other components. See http://nccommunities.org/conference.
Group posts are added to this page, blog style and emailed to members of the group. We can also have a Forum, if that would be useful.
NetSquared has posted a summary of our June 25 conference, a NetSquared Campfire, at
http://netsquared.org/blog/claire-sale/netsquared-campfire-0.
I've copied some of the conference documents and updated the timeline in an archive at http://nccommunities.org/conference2010 where I hope we can find things as we need them while planning the next conference, April 15, 2011.
If you plan to attend the conference, please register. Go to http://nctech4good.org/ or directly to http://nctech4good.org/register
If you would like to support scholarships, please also register as a sponsor, http://nctech4good.org/sponsor
The content of the website is done. Leandra is now working on making it look nice.

Please go to http://test.nccommunities.org/register and try out the conference registration forms. They are all on the test site, so you won't do any harm. I think the forms contain the information we want to collect. Let me know what you think should be changed.
Payment through PayPal is set up, so you want to check the box that you'll pay by check. If you don't check the box, it will go into PayPal but you get lots of chances to go back. If you DO go through and confirm the payment, your credit card will be charged and the payment will go to the RTPnet account.
Nancy sent me a pdf of the final survey, and I added it to the resources section, at http://nccommunities.org/conference-survey
I've updated http://nccommunities.org/conference-timeline Surprisingly, we are on schedule! I added a lot of info and links about what's happened so far. When we get done, I think this file will be the history. Judy
We're meeting March 11 at 1:00 at United Way (Pine Room, on the right when you come in). The main items are: Update on survey status, getting a handle on program tracks and sessions, and updating the timeline.
Notes from the March 3 meeting are posted in the Leadership Group.
Tani asked about RTPnet's previous conferences. RTPnet conferences focused on collaboration among nonprofit organizations, individual volunteers, and corporations to bridge the Triangle's Digital/Human Divide. Looking at the agendas, we are still talking about the same basic problems.
All the notes and stuff are at http://www.ibiblio.org/rtpnet/projects.html#conf

Much as I like putting stuff on NCCommunities, Google groups are hard to beat for email communication because you can post directly or simply click Reply on the Web page, so the Logistics committee (with thanks to Sean) has set up these Google groups: Leadership, Logistics, PR, Program, FinanceAndLegal. I created a group to plan recording sessions on 3/15, Recording.
You can view the posts. If you'd like to join a group let me know and I'll send you an invitation -- hallman@email.unc.edu.
As decisions are made, we ask that the committee leader tell the conference team about it using a Group Post here.
Here are my notes from the Logistics Committee point of view on the Friday Center walkthrough.
Sean, Leandra, Judy, Tani and I met with Donna Fitzgerald from the Friday Center.
We decided this would be the "NCTech4Good Conference" -- tagline TBD
Things for the participants' packets
Registration forms -- I think we'll need 3
Signs (the Center has easels for the signs in the building)
Other things we'll need the day of or otherwise affect what we do the day of
I reviewed the data that Paula sent and the number one problem people had questions about had to do with organizational databases -- 39 out of 198 questions, almost 20%. The questions were either along the lines of, "We're looking for a consultant to help us set up/select a database system," or "Do you have recommendations for a database system."
The second biggest question was asking for help finding someone to work on their website -- 36 questions, 18%.
The third most frequently asked question had to do with where to find cheap hardware and/or software -- 25 questions, 13%.
Then after that it was a mix of things -- help finding consultants (9%), email and newsletters (6%), where to get accounting software (either QuickBooks or specifically asking for something other than QuickBooks) (5%), recommendations for web hosts or ISPs (5%).
Interestingly, no one asked about integrating social media tools. It seems like this either means that (a) it's so easy no one is having problems with it or (b) it's not even on people's radar screens.
I think the limited number of questions about email and newsletters probably reflects the large number of online services available (e.g., Constant Contact, iContact, Mail Chimp, Vertical Response, etc.) that are all affordable and easy to use. As far as I know, there is not an equivalent for databases.
It also occurred to me that possibly a valuable service for RTPnet/PIN Inc., to offer would be a referral service for technology consultants. The complicated part about that would be figuring out how much vetting needed to be done, what would someone need to do to qualify to be on the referral list. You would want to make sure the people you were referring were good.
I've got the latest version of CiviCRM (3.1.2) installed on http://test.nccommunities.org/
Log in as demo with password demo. Click CiviCRM.
I created a report for attendees for the conference and put it on the dashboard -- cool!
In the bar across the top, click Events, then Dashboard. Go ahead and register, if you want. You can get out of PayPal and return to CiviCRM without paying.
If you'd like to donate to PINInc, go to http://test.nccommunities.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=3. I set the minimum to $5.
If you have a login on test.nccommunities.org, I can give you some admin privileges so you can poke around. I've got CiviCRM sample data on the site and some folks come in to explore the sample data, so what I'm adding gets put in along with all that stuff.
The following message went out earlier this month:
The City of Raleigh invites you to attend the launch of its nonprofit capacity building initiative, PROJECT LIFT: Let’s Impact our Future Together.
Join us for RESOURCE RALEIGH on Monday, March 29, 2010 at the Raleigh Convention Center.
Staff, board members and volunteers from community-based and faith-based organizations are invited to attend this all day capacity building conference. Participants will be able to choose their choice of 15 workshops on topics that will help you increase your organization’s effectiveness in the community.
During a catered lunch, participants will hear from Denise Tawwab, Founder & CEO of NC Connected, Inc. as she shares her insights on the triumphs and challenges of working in the nonprofit sector.
At the end of the day, be sure to join us for a networking fair where you will have the opportunity to meet one another and learn about the services available to the nonprofit community offered by local businesses, colleges & universities and consultants. You won’t want to miss this as we will be giving out prizes throughout the day!
Cost of attendance is $35.00 and includes a catered lunch, refreshments and materials throughout the day. For more information, please see the attached flier.
We hope to see you on March 29th!

The attached flyer didn't have much information but for a link to Raleigh's "Project Lift":
http://wiki.raleighnc.gov/capacitybuilding/index.php/Main_Page
and to the registration form - http://www.surveymonkey.com/resourceraleighregistration
which, somewhat oddly, has the list of workshops on the second page of the survey. The agenda is fairly broad -- from development, to planning, to city specific stuff -- but there are at least couple of sessions that would overlap with our agenda, I'd think, so maybe we should connect (if we're not already).
I've posted a section of surveys and reports in Resources at http://nccommunities.org/surveys-reports
The 2009 NTEN Community Survey Report might help with questions for our survey. I also found the NPower report executive summary interesting, especially "Paper and spreadsheets are two of the most widely used methods in nonprofit areas such as event planning, donor and volunteer management, constituency documentation, etc."
I've posted a summary of the Feb. 11 conference planning meeting at http://nccommunities.org/meeting10feb11![]()

Message to me from Amy Sample Ward February 1
Idealware has just announced "Field Guide to Software for Nonprofits: Fundraising, Communications and Outreach".

The second day plenary speaker at the NTEN conference is Suzanne Seggerman, President and Co-Found of Games for Change. I just looked at http://www.gamesforchange.org/ and a speech she gave -- http://poptech.org/popcasts/suzanne_seggerman__poptech_2008. I think we might want to have someone talk about games at the conference.
I've recently added several sections to the resources section at http://nccommunities.org/conference
Note in particular the timeline.
